Chandler Walnut Properties and Yield

Chandler Walnut Properties and Yield

It is very important to determine the right sapling type when establishing a walnut garden. Today, one of the most preferred species with its high yield and other superior features is Chandler walnut. You can find those are wondered about the characteristics and yield of this species, which provides high profits to its producers, in the continuation of our article.

Chandler Walnut Properties

Chandler is also known as the American walnut. This is because it was developed in America. It was developed as a result of crossing Pedro X UC 56-224 as part of the UC Davis breeding program at the University of California. This hybridization has been made to take the most positive characteristics of the ancestors.

The features of this particular type are as follows:

• It has a thin crust and its shell is easily broken.

• Its fruits are approximately 10-13 grams.

• Its inner fruit is 6-7 grams.

• The inner fruit ratio varies between 52% and 55%. This rate is quite high compared to many species.

• The inner fruit is easily separated from the shell.

• It has a late flowering feature. Thanks to this feature, it is almost not affected by spring frosts.

• It grows and develops in medium strength.

• The productivity in the lateral branches is 90%, and the productivity in the buds is 85-90%.

• It is resistant to diseases.

• It has a unique taste.

• Its inner fruit is very rich in terms of nutrients, including omega-3.

These features have made the Chandler walnut one of the most preferred species in the world.

Chandler Walnut Yield

Chandler walnut is a highly productive type. It begins to bear fruit immediately after the year it is planted. However, in the first three years, the fruits are taken from the tree before they develop. Thus, the growth of the tree is ensured. From the fourth year onwards, the fruits are not plucked and the products are started to be taken from the trees.

The amount of fruit to be taken from the trees may differ depending on the climatic conditions and the care process. With optimal care, approximately 900 kg of walnuts are taken from a 1 hectare orchard in the 4th year. When the trees are 10 years old, the amount of walnuts taken is more than 5 tons. But it should be noted that these figures are possible with professional care.

Planting Chandler Walnut

In order to get the desired yield from Chandler walnut, all processes must be carried out professionally from the very beginning. In this context, it is very important that the planting is done correctly.

Different planting intervals can be determined for this species. Planting intervals such as 5x7 m, 6x8 m and 5x8 m are determined according to the slope of the land. If trees are planted more frequently instead of these intervals, the side branches will touch each other in the following years and these will need to be pruned. Pruning the side branches means loss of yield.

For planting, first of all, the land should be fertilized with an organic fertilizer, and then the soil sub-resistance should be broken by deep ploughing. After these steps, 60-70 cm deep and wide pits should be opened and planting should be carried out. After the life water is given, the process is completed. Afterwards, the trees should be periodically watered and other maintenance procedures should be carried out.
